October 2019 Newletter

October 2019

It was wonderful to see so many of our families at our Open House last week!  Thank you for joining us to meet the staff and celebrate the learning that has taken place so far this year.

Job Action:

As you know, members of the C.U.P.E union, which includes: EAs, ECEs, secretaries and custodians, are taking part in legal job action.  This means that they are not performing their jobs as they usually do.  In all schools, principals and vice-principals are making adjustments within the school to ensure student safety.  We ask for your patience and understanding as we work to make adjustments to the internal workings of our school during this job action.  School buses are likely to be a little later than usual leaving the school because we will have fewer people checking attendance on each of the buses before the depart.  Rest assured, student safety and on-going quality learning remain our priority.

New Kindergarten Climber:

A big thank you to Parent Council for their fundraising efforts over the last three years that have made it possible for the kindergarten students to have a new “dome climber” on their yard.  The fence that was around this climber has been removed now that the sod has had a chance to establish itself and the students are enjoying their new play area.

Office Staff Changes:

After much thought and some sleepless nights, Mrs. Clarke and Ms. Gillespie made the very difficult decision to accept office administrator (secretary) positions at another school.  These two women are the faces of Molly Brant and the voice on the other end of the phone when families call.  They support staff and students alike and will be missed greatly!!  As luck would have it, both of these talented women will be moving to Henderson Public School.  Mrs. Clarke’s last day at Molly Brant will be Friday October 4th  and Ms. Gillespie’s last day will be Monday October 7th.  Until their jobs are filled permanently, two retired office administrators will be joining the Molly Brant team, Ms. Hulley and Mrs. Lemery.  We wish Mrs. Clarke and Ms. Gillespie all the best in their new jobs!

Arrival and Pick-Up Routines:

Our hallways are busy places at the beginning and end of the day.  In the interest of safety and supporting students to be independent, we are asking that families drop-off and meet their child on the school yard. If your child arrives late or needs to leave early, please go to the office where someone will help you.  Parents are asked not to enter the primary or kindergarten hall. If your child needs support with the transition in the morning or at the end of the day, a staff member will assist them. Please speak to your child’s teacher about their needs and to develop a plan.

Safety Week – September 30-October 4

During the first week of October, our students will be participating in a number of events that focus on safety, both in the school and on school buses.  In addition to bus safety presentations and bus evacuation drills, students will participate in fire drills, a lock down drill, and a hold and secure drill.  All of these procedures will be discussed in classes both before and after the event to make sure that students understand the reason why we do them and what is expected in order to keep everyone safe.

Parking Lot:

In the interest of safety, please follow the traffic flow arrows and parking restrictions.  Entrance to the parking lot will be restricted to buses, staff, and those in need of accessible parking daily from 8:00-8:25am and from 2:15-2:45pm.

Coats for Kids 2019

Once again, Molly Brant Elementary School will be assisting families with winter clothing for children.  If your child needs winter clothing, please return the bottom portion of this form to Ms. Carey at the school.  Coats and snow pants may be new or gently used.  If you have gently used coats or snow pants we will be happy to recycle them.

School Council:

We had a great turn out for the September School Council meeting and elections.  The following people form the executive for the 2019-20 school year:
