May 2020 Newsletter

May 1, 2020

Dear Molly Brant Students and Families,

This is not the way any of us thought we would be starting the month of May!  It is hard to believe that staff and students have been apart for a month and a half now.  This has not been an easy time for anyone.  As a staff, we miss being with our Molly Family tremendously!

Every family is different, and we know that you are all experiencing this situation differently.  Staff are continuing to reach out to families regularly.  Please know that when we call you, we are not calling to tell you to do the school work, but rather, are calling to ask how you are doing, to talk to students and to hear how we can help you.   The calls and emails are our way of connecting while we can't be physically together and are meant to be supportive. Classroom teachers continue to be the main point of contact for families, but the entire staff is available and willing to support you.

EXTENDED CLOSURE

As you have likely heard, the Minister of Education has announced that school buildings will remain closed until at least May 31st.  Unfortunately, at this time we are still not able to access the school to be able to return belongings to students.  We know that families would like to retrieve shoes and other belongings. We will communicate how this can be done as soon as we are able to.  Maintaining physical distancing and not gathering in large groups continues to be the directive of the Medical Officers of Health both locally and at the provincial level.  During this time, we must follow their direction.

KINGSTON SECONDARY SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

As you may know as a direct result of the pandemic, KSS will not be opening as schedule in September 2020.  As directed by the province to help slow the spread of COVID-19, construction on the new school has stopped and we do not know when it will start again or when the school will open to students.  Updates will be shared as we know more.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Kindergarten registration continues on-line.  If you live in our school area and have a child who will be turning 4 by December 31 2020, you can register them for kindergarten using the registration form that can be found here: https://www.limestone.on.ca/families/register_a_student

KEEP IN CONTACT

Although we are not physically in the building, voice messages and email messages to molly@limestone.on.ca continue to be checked throughout school days.  If you need to reach any member of the Molly Brant staff, please feel free to call or email us.  We continue to post information, good news stories and current events to our Twitter feed.  Follow us @MollyBrant_LDSB.

GRADE 8 GRADUATION

We know that for our graduating students and their families, there are a lot of questions about graduation.  While we don’t know yet what graduation will look like, we want to reassure you, this important event will not be forgotten or skipped over.  We are considering different possibilities, all of which must be discussed with Public Health before being finalized.  We will be required to adhere to physical distancing guidelines.  As soon as there is information to share, we will pass it along.

MALTBY CENTRE WORKSHOP: A Parent/Caregiver’s Guide to Surviving COVID-19

The Maltby Centre is offering this workshop virtually on May 4 at 5:00pm and again on May 13th at 10:00am.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Jessica to register at 613-329-6426  or jprior@maltbycentre.ca.

FOCUS ON WELLNESS

Throughout this difficult time we urge you to focus on your own wellness and that of your family.  We are so happy to see students engaging in some learning activities or participating in class meetings.  If this is what is right for your child and family, please do what fits best to your current circumstances.  If spending time together as a family is where your focus needs to be, that is OK too.  The Molly Brant staff is here to support you throughout this very difficult time.  Please take care of yourselves!
