January 2020 Newsletter

Welcome Back!  We are so happy to see the students returning to school and look forward to continuing our learning journey together.  We would like to welcome Elias George who has joined the Molly Brant staff as an Educational Assistant half-time.  Elias is from Oneida Nation of the Thames and has worked as an Indigenous tutor in the Limestone Board.  In addition to supporting students in the school, Elias will also be making connections with students who wish to learn more about Indigenous culture.

 Nut Aware School

Please do not send any food items containing peanuts or nuts to school.  We have several students in the school who have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts/nuts and even contact with nuts can cause them to have a severe reaction.

 Winter Weather Reminders

  • Students go outside for recess twice a day throughout the winter, except in the cases of extreme cold (below -25 degrees). It is important that children are dressed for the weather. Please contact the office, or Ms. Carey, if your child needs winter clothing.
  • When the ground is frozen, students are not permitted to use the climbers. When the ground cover under the climbers is frozen it does not provide the cushioning effect it is designed to provide, in the event of a fall.
  • If buses are cancelled in the morning, they do not run in the afternoon, regardless of any improvements in the weather. If you choose to drive your child to school when buses are cancelled, you must pick them up at 2:40.Please remember the change to our absence reporting procedure: if your child normally travels to school by bus and the buses are cancelled, you must report your child’s absence to us using the Safe Arrival program (just as you would if they are ill). This change in procedure is to ensure the safety of all students.
  • If the buses are cancelled, so too are all after school programs. This includes SISTEMA, Running and Reading, Lego Robotics and any sport team practices that were scheduled to take place.

Parent Council

The January Parent Council meeting will take place on Monday, January 6th at 6:00pm.

Pancake Brunch and PJ Day:

Once again this year, our dedicated Parent Council and volunteers from the Kingscourt Free Methodist Church provided a pancake brunch for all students.  It was a festive and cozy event, with everyone in PJs.  A big thank you to all our volunteers who made well over 1000 pancakes!  This event has quickly become a favourite for our students.  This year our event was generously supported by some local grocery stores. We extend our sincere thanks to Grant’s No Frills, Food Basics on Princess Street and Fresh Co. for their generous donations.  These donations made a significant contribution to the overall success of what Parent Council was able to offer at our Holiday Breakfast!

Family Movie Night:

Parent Council is organizing a Family Movie night on Thursday, January 30th.  This is an event for the whole family to enjoy together.  Details will be sent home soon.

 Head Lice

Did you know that your doctor can write a prescription for head lice medication treatment?  With this prescription, the treatment will be paid for under your child’s OHIP+ card.  If you need additional help, the pharmacists at Med + Pharmacy at 277 Bath Road can identify if your child has head lice and recommend the right treatment.  No appointment is necessary.
