Labour Update:

As you are likely aware, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) will be on strike on Thursday and Friday this week.  Unless there is an agreement reached before then, schools will be closed to students on Thursday February 6th and Friday February 7th.  SISTEMA will not take place on Thursday but the Parent Council Spaghetti Dinner and Dance WILL take place on Friday at 6:00 for those families who have purchased tickets.  In addition to the planned strikes, during this phase of the job action, teachers are no longer participating in extra-curricular activities, even those that take place during the school day.

Please check Twitter @LimestoneDSB and the Board website at: https://www.limestone.on.ca/  for current labour updates.

 Congratulations Mrs. Oomen

After a very dedicated career in education, Mrs. Oomen decided to retire at the end of January.  Mrs. Oomen has had a positive impact on the lives of countless students in the Limestone District School Board.  Her impact is felt years after students “graduate” from her care.  She will be missed greatly, but has promised to come back and visit, and to continue to support our students on an occasional basis.  We welcome Ms. Hamilton to the Molly Brant team for the remainder of the year in Mrs. Farndon and Ms. St. John’s kindergarten class.

 Lost and Found:

Our lost and found is overflowing once again!  Items will be displayed at the school during the week on February 10-14.  Students and families are encouraged to drop by and take a look for things that are missing from your home.  Items that have not been claimed by February 14th will be donated to a local charity.

For the Love of Reading Week:

During the week of February 10-14, we will be celebrating our love of reading at Molly Brant.  Reading is both a powerful tool for gaining knowledge and an enjoyable pastime.  Throughout the week there will be activities taking place to celebrate and encourage reading.

 Parent Council

The February Parent Council meeting will take place at 6:00 on Monday, February 3.  Monthly meetings take place on the first Monday of every month and are open to any parent/guardian of Molly Brant students.

 Sweetheart Spaghetti Dinner and Dance

Once again this year, our amazing Parent Council is hosting a spaghetti dinner and dance on February 7th from 6:00-8:00 in the gym.  The cost is $3.00 per person or $10 for a family.  Students must be accompanied by an adult.  Please return your money and RSVP form to the school by February 3rd.

 MBES Sports’ Team Shirts

Many of our Molly Brant sports’ team jerseys are missing.  These are the bright green/yellow shirts with the Molly Brant logo on the front and a number on the back.  If you have one of these shirts in your home, please return it to the school.

Happy Heart Day – February 14th

As a school, we are going to mark February 14th (Valentine’s Day) as “Happy Heart Day”.  On the 14th students are encouraged to wear whatever colour makes their heart happy.  Students will be participating in activities that make their hearts, and the hearts of others, happy and healthy.  This will include a focus on kindness and a focus on physical activity that gets our hearts pumping so they are healthy and strong.

 Winter Weather Reminders

  • Students go outside for recess twice a day throughout the winter, except in the cases of extreme cold (below -25 degrees). It is important that children are dressed for the weather. Please contact the office, or Ms. Carey, if your child needs winter clothing.
  • When the ground is frozen, students are not permitted to use the climbers. When the ground cover under the climbers is frozen it does not provide the cushioning effect it is designed to provide, in the event of a fall.
  • If buses are cancelled in the morning, they do not run in the afternoon, regardless of any improvements in the weather. This includes the bus to the Boys and Girls’ Club.If you choose to drive your child to school when buses are cancelled, you must pick them up at 2:40.
  • If your child is not coming to school when buses are cancelled, please report your child’s absence through the Safe Arrival program, even if they usually take the bus.
  • When the buses are cancelled, ALL after school programs and activities are cancelled. This includes sports team practices, SISTEMA, Girl’s Inc, Pathways and Running and Reading. Please pick your child up at 2:40 when buses are cancelled as there is no supervision beyond that time.

School Year Calendar 2020-2021 Stakeholder Survey

The Limestone District School Board is requesting feedback on two options for the 2020-21 School Year Calendar.  With Labour Day landing on September 7th, 2020, school will need to begin prior to Labour Day in order to ensure that the calendar has the required amount of days as prescribed by the Ministry of Education.

In consultation with the School Boards that we share transportation with – Hastings and Prince Edward and Algonquin Lakeshore – and our School Year Calendar Committee, we are seeking input on starting school on either Monday, August 31st, 2020 or Tuesday, September 1st, 2020.   Both of these options would be PA Days, with students starting school the following day.  Each option has implications for the end of the school year and the placement of the final PA Day.  These are explained in the survey.

LDSB is looking for feedback from students, staff, parents and our community members.  It would be appreciated if you would please take a moment to respond to the two options on an on-line survey.  The survey is open for responses until Friday, Feb. 7th.   Your input is important to us and we appreciate your time in submitting your feedback and comments. For more information, please visit the LDSB website which also provides a link to the Ministry of Education website.
